Want to visit?
It can be hard to go to a church for the first time. "What will the service be like?" "What do I do with my children?" "What should I wear?" Questions and curiosities about church can make it intimidating even before you set foot in the door.

Below we hope to answer some of your questions about Mighty Fortress before you visit. Our friendly group wants to make your visit with us comfortable and easy – especially if it's your first visit. Feel free to let us know if there are more answers we can offer to be more helpful.

Have you ever wondered "Do I have to dress up? What do I wear to a church I’ve never been to before?"

The Bible doesn’t demand a certain dress code. Mighty Fortress doesn’t either. Like others do, we try to make worship a special time here. Some people choose to reflect this in the way we dress.

But dress is a personal matter with God. Someone might dress casually and rejoice that we have a God who accepts us as we are. Someone else may dress to reflect the awe and reverence we have for our Savior King. Either way, we’re just happy you’re here.

"Are they going to take an offering?" "Am I supposed to give?" Don't worry. Those are normal questions that spring up when a plate is passed at church.

The Bible teaches that offerings to God reflect a trust that everything we have is a gift from Him. As many others do, we bring offerings to God through our church. Offerings are like personal thank you cards to God who loves us. So we won't make any rules on what people have to give or how much.

When you see the plate passed during the service you'll know it's just the normal time we've set aside to bring our gifts to God. Mighty Fortress has joined together to share God’s message in Alberta and around the world. You're certainly welcome to give an offering, but please don't feel like you have to. You are our guests. We're just glad you gave us the opportunity to share God’s Word with you!

The Worst that Can Happen

Going to church for the first time can be scary. Here are some nervous thoughts you might have:

"What if they asked me to stand up and say something?" Don't worry. We won’t embarrass you! We want you to feel right at home. We promise to do all we can for you to hear about Jesus without tension.

"My child is going to be out of control." Please know that no one will look at you funny if you're child speaks...or acts up. Your whole family is always welcome. Our church building has a comfortable room set aside for parents and children. We've provided a place to sit, a changing table, and a number of soft toys to put you at ease. A wall speaker allows you to tune into the service from the parents' room.

"I know I will feel out of place." I hope this guide can provide a little peace of mind. I think you'll find our people and pastor will make you feel right at home. But if you have other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. All of our people are willing and able to be a help or a friend.

"What if I say or do something wrong?" All of us have felt that awkward feeling in a new place. I hope you find the people of Mighty Fortress to be normal people just like you. We won't throw cold water on anyone by being critical. We will introduce you to an upbeat Christian family.

"I know they'll try to sign me up for something." Church membership is a voluntary thing. Sharing Jesus' forgiveness and his heavenly promise are our only agenda. We're not merely interested in adding another name to our books. We are interested in sharing how God wrote your name in the Book of Life. Church membership takes time. People need time to think without pressure. We understand that. And we'll be here for you whenever you need us. Until then, feel free to ask our pastor about God, the Bible, or anything else that's on your mind.

"I don’t know much of anything about the Bible." That's ok! Mighty Fortress is a great place to learn without pressure. We'll offer personal and public opportunities to learn more about the Bible. You won’t have to take a quiz. Members of Mighty Fortress are all at different levels of Bible knowledge.

One Last Thought

We hope we've helped ease your mind and alleviate some of your fears. Mighty Fortress has two simple goals. We have the greatest treasure that lasts forever in the Good News about Jesus. We want to grow in our faith and share God's treasure with people like you.
