About Our Beliefs

We live in an ever changing world.  And it’s easy to see here in Red Deer where our economy has been booming for the last few years and new houses spring up all around us.  The success we have living in such a prosperous place like Red Deer can lead us to think “I can do anything.”  And that is the message we hear all around us.  But as quickly as prosperity, success and fortune come, just as quickly comes the fall.  “You’ve got cancer.”  “You don’t have a job here anymore.”  “You need help.”

Where can you turn if you don’t feel like your life is full of success?  What do you do if you really do need help because you aren’t perfect?  What can comfort you when you are filled with guilt about the past?  What do you do when you realize that like the rest of humanity you have sinned, and hurt the people you love, and your God?

We may not be perfect people, but at Mighty Fortress we have a perfect God.

Our God is filled with strength and power, which he demonstrated not in a flashy show, but by coming in the meekness of a Saviour.  Jesus was born in a lowly stable, and lived a life perfect and without sin, but not one of fame and fortune.  He came to demonstrate God’s love and mercy by dying on a cross for us, and taking upon himself all our weakness and failure, all our sin.  The Bible says of Jesus’ death, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

What God was doing was taking upon himself all our imperfections and sin, so that we might be safe, secure, forgiven, and perfect in his sight.  That means we are right with God.  And we know this is true, because God raised his Son Jesus from the dead to show by his power, that the good news of Jesus is all true.

At Mighty Fortress you will find a family of believers who realize that only in Jesus Christ are we secure in God’s hands.  This good news gives us strength to live our faith boldly in the world.  And it helps us see God’s power at work in our own weaknesses.  Just as one believer, the apostle Paul found strength and refuge in the cross, so do we:

“Just as Christ said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’ therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

At Mighty Fortress we hold onto the promises of God as our strength no matter what the world believes or does.

In an age of confusion, we believe that the Bible is God's Word, without error.

In an age of anxiety, we believe that real peace comes from Jesus Christ.

In an age of doubt, we believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin, Mary.

In an age of guilt, we believe that Jesus died on the cross to take away all of our sins.

In an age without hope, we believe that Jesus rose physically from death. Because he rose we too will rise to live with him in heaven after we die.

In an age of skepticism, we believe that God is at work in the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion

In an age of despair, we believe that God's promises heal and transform lives.

In an age of violence, we believe that God calls us to embody his love in our lives.

In an age of constant change, we believe in the unchanging Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In an age saturated with choices, we believe that Jesus is our only Saviour.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. ~ 2 Samuel 22:2,3
